What is the Japan Business Manager Visa?

Business Manager visa for foreign nationals engaged in the following activities in Japan (Japanese residency).

Establishing a company and operating a business in Japan. Making certain kinds of investments.
A foreign national (or foreign corporation) who is engaged in management activities for a business operated by a foreign national (or foreign corporation).
There are no restrictions on the contents of the business.

As of the end of June 2020, there were 27,119 business management visa holders, 14,330 of whom were Chinese, accounting for 53% .

It is more difficult to apply for a business manager visa than a general employment visa. It has a risk to be denied the visa for very minor things.

If the application is unsuccessful, the company cannot be operated, and the losses are greater (various costs already incurred).

Requirements for establishing a Japanese company

At least one shareholder and one director.
At least one local Japanese director is required, with no nationality restrictions.
No company secretary is required.
All foreign investment is allowed, and foreign investors can invest 100% of the shares.
Must have a registered office address in Japan (No virtual office for the purpose of applying for a “business/manager visa”).
The minimum paid-up capital is JPY 5,000,000.

Duration of stay

1 year, 3 years, or 5 years
After 5 years, you can apply for Japanese citizenship, after 10 years, you can apply for permanent residence visa.
Highly skilled professional (HSP) foreigner (70 points or more) can apply for permanent residence visa (a.k.a. Green card) after 3 years, and HSP person of 80 points or more can apply for permanent residence visa after 1 year.

Renewal of Business Manager Visa

The following items will be reviewed when you renew your Japan business manager visa.

Japan family residency visa

A Japanese family visa is a visa issued to the dependent spouse or child of a foreign national with an employment visa or management visa to live together.

The child can attend school in Japan after receiving a family visa. You can choose from Japanese public schools or international private schools.

This visa is a non-working visa type, however, part-time work is permitted for up to 28 hours a week after obtaining “permission to engage in activities other than those permitted”.

As a foreigner, I would like to start a new business in Japan, but what immigration procedures should I follow?: When a foreigner starts a business in Japan, such as establishing a company, it is subject to the status of residence “Business Manager” visa . This status of residence also applies when the foreigner substantially participates in the management or administration of the business, such as as an officer such as president, director or auditor, or an employee such as department head, factory manager or branch manager.
The period of stay is five years, three years, one year, six months, four months or three months.

How can I obtain a “Business Manager” visa status of residence?: Simply starting a business (starting a business) is not enough; the status of residence is only granted if certain criteria are met, taking into consideration the stability and continuity of the business. If you want to start a new business in Japan, you must meet the following criteria;
– The applicant must have a business facility in Japan.
– The business must have at least two full-time employees.

If you plan to stay in Japan for a long period of time and continue running your business, it is important to look ahead to the future, to the renewal of your period of stay.

Although the decision is made comprehensively, not only on the financial results for a single year, but also on the balance sheet situation, etc., if the established business has a net profit in the most recent period and a surplus at the end of the same period, it is considered in practice that the continuity of the business can be proven without any problems.
Although everyone will have their own targets as to how much profit they can make, let us consider a model case of property investment, taking approximately 400,000 yen per month as an example as the minimum cost of living to continue living in Japan. For example, if you invest in real estate with a property worth 60 million yen and the surface yield is 10%, from which you can deduct taxes and other expenses to raise the real yield to 8%, you can expect a profit of 4.8 million yen per year. This would be enough to cover the minimum cost of living in Japan.

Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) Visa for Business Manager

It can be described as an upgraded version of the Business Manager visa. The official name is “Highly skilled professional (i) (c)”.

You can obtain a 5-year work visa.
